Hot spots, or acute moist dermatitis, are less common in cats than in dogs, but can be just as troublesome. The condition is characterised by rapid development of lesions, itching and pain. It can be caused by allergies, parasites (fleas, mites), injuries or excessive licking. In some cats, skin lesions are recurrent and can lead to chronic inflammation.
Traditionally, cleansing and disinfecting the lesions, shaving the hair around the wound, and using antibiotics and glucocorticosteroids to reduce inflammation are used. This treatment brings improvement, but does not always prevent recurrence, especially if the source of the problem is allergies or chronic skin diseases.
MSCs reduce excessive immune responses and decrease inflammation. They can be used in cats with recurrent skin problems, supporting skin regeneration and limiting the recurrence of hot spots.
